Clarinova,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the purpose of fashion shows. It's wonderful that shows can bring in orders, build relationships and serve as marketing tools all at one time. Very efficient.

Best,

Sarah

We'd seen the same low turnout for the Action Sports Retailer show, with about 30 fewer brands from the last show. ( http://cli.gs/yNQdhW ) Many major brands took conference rooms to write orders, but did not have booths on the floor.

In regard to Deacon's comment, shows can have several purposes: marketing, writing orders, building relationships, etc. As Deacon noted, the marketing-heavy shows like NYFW and ASR saw substantial declines, but order-writing shows like WWIN ( http://cli.gs/e419es ) are booked solid for Feb 2009

I think that will be the trend: marketing shows will see declines in attendance as marketing moves to more cost effective options like the Web, but shows that emphasize writing orders and building relationships will do fine.

Deacon,

I love your enthusiasm! Online shows are another innovative and low-cost alternative to Fashion Week. Great idea. This alternative will bring more people to their show and offer full access to more consumers.

Best,

Sarah

the right move: viktor & rolf online show last season.

with all the cancellations on the fall ‘09 shows, we really don’t understand why designers don’t produce online shows. one word: technophobia.

we can understand why fashion editors don’t like this format; online shows lessen the ‘importance’ and the elitism of the fashion bubble world. but everyone else would embrace it. what is not to love when you know anna wintor would be watching the viktor & rolf show the same way i am watching it now. talk about fashion democracy!

any buyers really placing orders during the shows? any real paying customers actually get into the shows? no! basically, it is just an advertising event. they do it because that’s what you are suppose to do. can fashion figure out a more creative way to market the products?

FashionBrand,

I did not know designers were using YouTube in place of runway?!? That is very innovative and with the changing times.

Best,

Sarah

I know for some it seems like outer space. Westchester County has many chic, funky, and glamourous places to hold fashion shows. Plus plenty of money is up here ^_^

I think it's great that more designers are making their new collections more accessible to real people. Fashion Shows have become very elitist.

I like the idea that some designers have of using social media such as YouTube instead of an expensive runway show.
